If Proxmox looks right but nobody wants to run it, the choice is self-managed vs managed. Six alternatives compared, including what managed covers.

Proxmox Alternatives for Teams That Don't Want to Self-Manage

Somebody ran the evaluation. Proxmox did everything the environment needed, the licensing maths was decisive, and the recommendation was written up. Then a director asked who would be patching the cluster at eleven at night in December, and the room went quiet.

If that is roughly where you are, the question in front of you is self-managed versus managed. Which hypervisor is a separate question with a different answer.


Why teams walk away from Proxmox after liking it

Nothing here is a criticism of the software. Proxmox VE is free under the AGPLv3 with the complete feature set, it clusters, it does live migration, it integrates Ceph and ZFS, and the 9.2 release in May 2026 added dynamic load balancing that closed one of the last real gaps against vSphere.

The problem is elsewhere.

When you self-manage a virtualisation platform, you inherit the whole operational surface. Patching happens on your cadence, which in practice means it happens when someone remembers. Cluster upgrades need a maintenance window, a rollback plan, and someone confident enough to execute both. Storage rebuilds need a person who can tell a normal Ceph recovery from one that is going wrong, and that judgement is not something you can hire for on a Tuesday.

Then there is the failure mode nobody prices. The engineer who designed the cluster, chose the failure domains and understood why the fencing was configured that way eventually leaves. The platform keeps running perfectly, right up until the day it needs someone who knows why it was built like that.

That risk appears in no licensing comparison, and it is the reason a lot of technically sound Proxmox decisions get reversed eighteen months later.


The six realistic alternatives

Managed Proxmox

Several providers will build and operate a Proxmox environment for you, folding hardware, licensing, storage, backup and support into a monthly figure.

This is the most direct answer if you want Proxmox specifically and want somebody else running it. You keep the platform you evaluated and hand over the operations.

What to check is depth. Proxmox managed services are a newer market than VMware managed services, and there is a meaningful difference between a provider who runs Proxmox clusters daily and one who added it to the price list after Broadcom's licensing changes created demand.

Nutanix

Enterprise hyper-converged infrastructure with its own AHV hypervisor and mature migration tooling from vSphere.
The managed operational burden is genuinely lower than Proxmox, and the vendor relationship is a real one with support obligations attached. Price it before assuming it solves the problem, because organisations sometimes arrive at Nutanix expecting the licensing relief that sent them looking in the first place and find enterprise pricing waiting.

Hyper-V with a managed provider

If your estate is predominantly Windows and you already hold Windows Server Datacenter licences, the hypervisor is effectively paid for and plenty of providers will run it.
The trade is the same one that applies to Hyper-V generally. Linux guests are a second-class experience, and the standalone free Hyper-V Server product was discontinued, so this works cleanly only for organisations already committed to the Windows stack.

Public cloud

For small estates with genuinely variable demand, rebuilding a virtualisation platform of any kind is effort spent on the wrong problem. AWS, Azure or Google Cloud will absorb the workload and you operate nothing.

Where this stops working is steady-state utilisation. A workload running consistently high with low variance pays an elasticity premium for capacity it never releases, which we covered in when private cloud beats public cloud, and when it doesn't.

Managed VMware

Still an option, and worth knowing that the field has narrowed considerably.

Broadcom restructured the VMware Cloud Service Provider programme during 2026, ending contracts with partners who did not renew and setting a deadline for closing open opportunities. Reporting at the time described the number of remaining providers as a small fraction of a partner ecosystem that had previously numbered in the thousands.

If your organisation genuinely needs vSphere specifically, managed VMware exists. The commercial terms flow from Broadcom's licensing model, so expect the pricing to reflect it.

Managed OpenStack

This is what we do, so treat the rest of this section accordingly.

OpenStack is the open source infrastructure platform behind a large share of private and public clouds. It runs KVM, supports live migration, has no per-core hypervisor licence, and exposes a full API. It also has a steeper operational learning curve than Proxmox, which is precisely why almost nobody runs it themselves unless they have a dedicated platform team.

Managed OpenStack inverts that. Someone else operates the control plane, the storage layer, the patching and the upgrades. You get instances, volumes, networks and an API, and you never touch a hypervisor.

The relevant comparison to Proxmox is not feature-by-feature. The capabilities you were choosing Proxmox for, dedicated hardware, live migration, no licence per core, full control over your environment, are all present, and the operational surface that made you hesitate belongs to someone else.


What "managed" actually needs to cover

What managed actually needs to cover

The word is used loosely enough to be meaningless, so here is what to ask any provider on this list.


Who patches the platform, and on what schedule? If the answer involves you scheduling anything, it is not managed.

Who owns storage? Design, capacity planning, rebuilds and failure response. This is where self-managed deployments most often come unstuck, so it is the sharpest test of what a provider is actually taking on.

What happens at three in the morning? Specifically whether the first person who answers can act, or whether they open a ticket for someone who can. This is the single largest quality difference between managed providers and it rarely appears in marketing material.

Do you still get API access? Managed should not mean a locked-down portal. If you cannot run Terraform against it, you have traded more control than you meant to.

Is the hardware dedicated? Managed and multi-tenant are different things. If single tenancy was part of why you were looking at Proxmox, confirm it survives the move.

What does the bill do when traffic doubles? Fixed monthly and usage-metered are very different commercial models wearing the same word.


Making the call

Three questions decide it, and they are all about people rather than technology.


Is there someone whose actual job is infrastructure? Not someone who looks after it alongside four other responsibilities. If yes, self-managed Proxmox is a good answer and you should go and use it.

What happens if that person leaves? If the honest answer is that nobody else could pick it up, you have a single point of failure that no amount of cluster redundancy addresses.

What is the team's time worth on something else? Platform operations are a real cost even when they are invisible, because they are paid in attention rather than invoices. If your engineers are the product, spending them on Ceph is a choice with a price.

Can I still use Terraform on managed infrastructure? On a properly managed platform, yes. If a provider cannot give you API access and infrastructure-as-code support, that is a significant limitation worth knowing before you commit.


Is managed private cloud more expensive than self-managed Proxmox? The licensing is cheaper on Proxmox, because it can be free. The comparison that matters includes hardware, the storage layer, backup infrastructure, and the salaried time of whoever operates it. Run that comparison rather than the licence one.


Do I lose single tenancy by moving to managed? Not necessarily, and it depends entirely on the provider. Managed private cloud on dedicated hardware and managed multi-tenant cloud are different products. Ask directly.
